PowerBuilder UI Designer Feedback

The UI Designer has been out for nearly a week. Have you tried it? If so, please drop me a line at brad.wery@PowerToTheBuilder.com. I would like to hear what you think of it.

I'm trying something new with the UI in this application. I've gone away from using a menu and developed a semi-ribbon type interface. I'm curious to know what you think of this. If it's something the community would be interested in maybe I can develop it more. I think it would take a bit of work to get it to look and act like the Microsoft Ribbon control but it could be doable.

If you have any other idea's for controls that would make your application bette please let me know. I will look into how much effort it would take to build it. Also, if you have any enhancement idea's for the current controls, I would like to hear about it

How the designer saved me time...

I was recently asked to add support for font names and font sizes in the tab control. In the past I would have made changes to the tab control, then add any new functions to the sample application and run the application. If I needed to test multiple fonts and font sizes I would have had to stop the sample application, make the change to the function call then run it again. With the designer I was able to do all of this on the fly. It made things so much easier. I'm expecting this type of time savings from future users as well.

With that said...yes, I've been making changes to the controls as I've been developing the new designer. Font support in the tab control is one. There have been other small enhancements to most of the other controls (e.g. reset capabilities). The designer required some big enhancements to the toolbar control. That will be my next task. To be honest, I'm really excited about this.

So, by time I'm done, the community will have a new tool and a new set of features that they can take advantage of in the UI library.

UI Designer - Part 2

I'm starting to make some good progress. I pretty much have the shell done and windows for each of the different controls. Next will be the hard part. I need to develop a very flexible properties window. I have an idea of how to do it. I can't wait to get this tool done. It's going to make our jobs much easier.

Actually, once I get the core stuff working, I'll end up using the application to develop the rest of the application. How cool is that.

Here is the current situation with the UI controls. Lets say you want to add a toolbar to your application. Right now you have to code all the of_AddItem's, figure out which pictures you want to use, are they opened on the left or right, border or no border...all through code. This means you have to figure out which functions to call. Add it to your application, run your application to see the results then go back and make modifications.

With this application you would open a new "ToolbarStrip Painter" window. There will be an empty toolbar presented to you. To the right will be a properties window. You will use this to customize your toolbar. You will also use this properties window to add items and select images. While you're doing this the toolbar will automatically be updated. You can see first hand what it will look like. On the screen you will also see a script editor type window. It will display all the PowerScript code that you will need to plug into your application. This code will be read-only and will only be used for copying.

You will then be able to save your changes so you can work with what you've created another time.

If you have any idea's that you think would make it more of a useful tool please let me know. I will post some screenshots in the coming days as I make more progress.

Designer for UI Controls

For the longest time I wanted to create an "IDE" for the UI controls. It would be a tool that you could use to design your controls graphically without having to run your application to see what they will look like. The new designer would generate all the code you would need to setup the look you need.

The sample application that comes with the controls try's to do some of this. It lets you check boxes and select styles. One thing it doesn't give you is code, code you can use to plug directly into your application. Also, it doesn't have options for all the properties for all the controls. this new designer will be a complete solution.

I just started it today. I'm not sure when it will be complete. I think it's going to be a lot of work.

Let me know what you think. Is this a tool you would use?

PBGUIControls 2.4.0 Now Available

A new version of the PBGUIControls have just been released. There have been a number of improvements and enhancements added to the various controls.

  - ToolbarStrip
      * Added the ability to make a toolbar item invisible.
  - PowerDock
      * The panels were closing too soon in some cases when the mouse left. This has been fixed.
      * Close button will now display in the document tab.
  - TabControl
      * You can now display the close button in the tab instead of the tab strip.
  - XPListBar
      * Some performance improvements were made.
  - ButtonListBar
      * A new style was added. You can display in button or list mode.
  - PB 10.0
      * The controls are now available in PB10.
  - PBNI UNICODE Issues
      * The PBX file used for drawing didn't support PowerBuilder's UNICODE environment. This caused conflicts with other PBNI objects.

Version 2.5.0 is currently being planned out. In this version you should see more improvements made to the toolbar control.

New License Agreement

To date, there has been no license agreement for the PBGUIControls found at www.PowerToTheBuilder.com. My way of thinking was that this was a good thing for you, the developer. Essentially, I wanted to provide the PowerBuilder Community with a set of tools that they could use without having to worry about copyright or licensing issues. There would be no questions about IP, costs or anything else that naturally comes with open source software. It's yours to use how you wish.

There was one thing that I didn't consider and that was protecting myself from liabilities. A license agreement is an agreement between two parties, the provider of the software (me) and the user of the software (you). It's meant to protect both parties. With that said, I've now added an EULA to the PBGUIControls. You must agree to the terms before downloading.

Here is the gist of the agreement. You can use the controls as you wish like you are today. Free of IP and copyright issues. PowerToTheBuilder (me), will provide the software as is without any warranty. Essentially, I can't be held liable for anything that goes wrong while you use the controls.

That's it. It's a Win-Win-Win for everyone. No restrictions and a clear message about warranty and copyright.

Status Report

So far my progress on the next release of the GUI controls is coming alone nicely.

I've implemented changes that I've received from the community.
I've implemented changes that I've made to my own version of the controls.
Started work on the tab control.

Added functions so you can specify if you want the close button to appear in the tab strip or the tab.

Started work on the drawing code for the close button in the tab.

I hope to get the tab control enhancements done soon. Maybe even by the end of the weekend (it's a long weekend here in Canada).

The next control to receive some much need attention will be the toolbar strip. There is so much I can do to that control that it would keep me busy forever. Right now I'll concentrate on adding support for larger images, text position and padding.

Time for a new version of the PBGUIControls

Wow, it seems like forever since I last worked on the PBGUIControls. I've received a lot of feedback and enhancement ideas over the months. Now it's time to implement.

I spent the whole night last night moving changes from my "personal" version of the controls to the public version. There are some enhancements to how dock panels pop out and in. It should be much better. In the past the dock panel would close to soon when your mouse left it. I've also added some visibility logic to the toolbar. Now you can make toolbar items visible and invisible as you wish. A fellow PBer had a great new idea for the ButtonListbar. You can now display it as a list instead of a button list (you'll have to see it). This has been added and is working great.

I have so many more ideas that I really don't know where to start. My first plan of action is to make sure that all the changes that other people have made and provided me are available in the public version. Once this is done I will spend some time on the tab control, toolbar control and maybe PowerDock. This is what I'm thinking:

Tab Control:

1 - Add function so you can display close button on the tab strip (like it is now) or on the actual tab itself.

Toolbar Control:

1 - Support 16x16, 24x24, 32x32 and 48x48 icons.
2 - Add padding properties to the toolbar items.
3 - Allow the developer to change the position of the text (Right side, Left side, Top or Bottom)

PowerDock:

1 - I really want to see split panes. The ability to display two tab controls side-by-side.
2 - Look into adding an optional close button to the panels.

For the last couple weeks I've been thinking about how I could create a Ribbon control for PB. I'm still debating on whether it's possible. I think in addition to the control a new designer would have to be created to support it. This could be a lot of work all on its own. What do you think, is it worth the effort?

Lastly, I've made a decision to no longer enhance the .Net Winforms version of the UI controls. I find that they are two hard to work with because a lot of what I need on the .Net side isn't available to me. Also, porting changes over to the .Net version is very time consuming. I don't think the return on investment is there. Please let me know if this is a bad decision. Are many of you deploying as a .Net Winforms application?

I've always been interested in the Microsoft and Apple story. It amazes me what these two companies did and how they did it. Both started by young enthusiastic people. Honestly, I envy people like Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Steve Ballmer. They were at the forefront of something huge.

A co-worker brought this to my attention: http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/history/. It's a new video series on Microsoft Channel 9. It brings you back, via short videos, to the time when it all started for Microsoft. It's very inspirational stuff.

This is no lie, one of my favorite movies is Pirates of Silicon Valley. I know that it very quickly goes through the beginnings of Apple and Microsoft but it's still great to watch nonetheless.

The one thing that bothers me is that I didn't have the opportunity to get in on the action back in the 70's. Could you just imagine.

If someone offered, on a per contract basis, to make your applications look up-to-date would you go for it. Lets consider this an informal survey. I'm wondering if this would make for a successful business. How many people out there would rather pay someone to modify their applications UI? Remember that the UI, in commercial applications, give customers their first impressions of the software they are evaluating. The fact of the matter is that an old looking UI really has a negative impact an applications ability to sell.

I'm going to prepare some sort of business plan this weekend to see if this could be a viable business. There are a lot of questions. Is the PB community large enough to sustain this? Are there enough applications out there that need a face lift? What are people willing to pay to get that face lift done?

Let me know what you think. Help me fill in the blanks.

New Controls ...Existing Controls

My current dilemma is that I have more work than I have time. I can spend the remainder of my life working non-stop and I probably still wouldn't get everything done. This posses a problem. I want to get a new version of the PowerToTheBuilder.com UI controls out to the public. The question is, what do I work on?

I need you to give me some idea's. Do I enhance what's there? Do I develop new controls? If I develop new controls, what would I develop? What does PowerBuilder need right now?

Perhaps something else should be developed. Maybe some non-visual components? What non-visual components would the community need?

QweryBuilder version 5.1.0

Today Werysoft releases QweryBuilder version 5.1.0. This version contains a few interesting enhancements as well as some bug fixes.

The one enhancement that will be noticeable when first running the application is the Start Page. The purpose of the start page is to give you an opportunity to get started quickly with little effort. You will be presented with a list of your datasources. Along with existing datasources, you will have an option to create a new one. To get started, all you have to do is drag a datasource onto one of the three query window images. Doing this will create your connection and open a new window. That's it, you're ready to go. Alternatively, you can double click on a datasource to connect then click on a query window image, double click on one of the last used files or double click on one of the last viewed database objects.

The Start Page also contains a News and Information section. This is an HTML page that will be maintained by Werysoft. It will be used to display database and Werysoft related news and information. You can, in the options window, change the URL to point to a team blog, company intranet or whatever else you want to view. If you would to view nothing at all, you can blank out the URL in the options window.

Another exciting feature is the script completion notification pop-up. Sometimes you may have to execute a long running script. You may leave the application and have to check back periodically to see if the script has complete. Now, QweryBuilder will notify you when the script is done. This is done in a similar fashion to Outlook and how it displays a new email pop-up at the bottom of your screen. The pop-up that QweryBuilder displays will have a link that will bring you to your script.

Some work has also been done to the Object Browser. You now have more options when right clicking on an object. You can now do things like view table data and execute stored procedures.

Version 5.2.0 is currently being planned and should be just as exciting of a release as version 5.1.0.
